چکیده

The evolution of quasar clustering is investigated with a new sample of 388 quasars with 0.3 < z ≤ 2.2, B ≤ 20.5 and MB < −23, selected over an area of 24.6 deg 2 in the South Galactic Pole. Assuming a two-point correlation function of the form ξ(r) = (r/ro) , we detect clustering with r0 = 6.2 ± 1.6 h −1 comoving Mpc and ξ̄(r = 15 hMpc) = 3 r3 ∫ r 0 x ξ(x)dx = 0.52± 20 at an average redshift of < z = 1.3 >. We find a 2σ significant increase of the quasar clustering between z = 0.95 and z = 1.8, independent of the quasar absolute magnitude and inconsistent with recent evidence on the evolution of galaxy clustering. If other quasar samples are added (resulting in a total data-set of 737 quasars) the increase of the quasar clustering is still favoured although it becomes less significant. With a parameterization of the evolution of the type ξ(r, z) = (r/r0) (1 + z) we find ǫ ≃ −2.5. Evolutionary parameters ǫ > 0.0 are excluded at a 0.3% probability level, to be compared with ǫ ∼ 0.8 found for galaxies. The observed clustering properties appear qualitatively consistent with a scenario of Ω = 1 CDM in which a) the difference between the quasar and the galaxy clustering can be explained as a difference in the effective bias and redshift distributions, and b) the quasars, with a lifetime of t ∼ 10yr, sparsely sample halos of mass greater than Mmin ∼ 10 12 − 10 h M⊙. We discuss also the possibility that the observed change in the quasar clustering is due to an increase in the fraction of early-type galaxies as quasar hosts at high z. Evidence for Merger-Driven Activity in the Clustering of High Redshift Quasars

Recently, a very large clustering length has been measured for quasars at a redshift of z ∼ 4. In combination with the observed quasar luminosity function we assess the implications of this clustering for the relationship between quasar luminosity and dark matter halo mass. Our analysis allows for non-linearity and finite scatter in the relation between quasar luminosity and halo mass, as well ...

Estimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks

A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...

Quasar Elemental Abundances and Host Galaxy Evolution

High redshift quasars mark the locations where massive galaxies are rapidly being assembled and forming stars. There is growing evidence that quasar environments are metal-rich out to redshifts of at least five. The gas-phase metallicities are typically solar to several times solar, based on independent analyses of quasar broad emission lines and intrinsic narrow absorption lines. These results...

Luminosity and redshift dependent quasar clustering

We present detailed clustering measurements for a flux limited sample of ∼ 14, 000 quasars extracted from the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 2.1. After splitting the sample into three redshift bins and each of them into six luminosity intervals, we estimate the quasar projected auto and cross-correlation functions at a given redshift for separations 3 ∼ < r/hMpc ∼...

A Chandra observation of the z = 2 . 285 galaxy FSC 10214 + 4724 : Evidence for a Compton - thick quasar ?

We present a ≈ 20 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the strongly lensed z = 2.285 ultra-luminous infrared galaxy FSC 10214+4724. Although this observation achieves the equivalent sensitivity of an up-to ≈ 4 Ms Chandra exposure (when corrected for gravitational lensing), the rest-frame 1.6–26.3 keV emission from FSC 10214+4724 is weak (LX ≈ 2×10 erg s for a lensing boost of ≈ 100); a significant ...
